Post Procedure

What to Expect – Following Surgery

Will I feel nauseated?

Nausea and vomiting is one of the most common side effects of anesthesia and can often be prevented with medications administered before and during your procedure. Despite best efforts some patients still experience nausea and vomiting. Your anesthesia team will work with you to devise a plan to minimize this risk according to your medical conditions and the surgery you are having.

Will I have a sore throat?

A sore or irritated throat is very common after surgery and is the result of a breathing device that is placed in your windpipe (after you are asleep) to keep you safe during surgery. Fortunately, this is usually mild and goes away in a matter of hours. Breathing humidified air can be helpful if your throat is bothering you.

Will I have pain after surgery?

Some degree of pain or discomfort is expected after surgeryand will depend on the type of surgery you are having. Your anesthesia team will devise a plan with you to make your recovery as comfortable as possible. Any pain medication prescribed will be from your surgeon so please contact him/her if you have questions.

Why am I constipated?

Constipation is very common following surgery and is usually the result of dehydration and narcotic pain medicine. Plan on drinking plenty of water and taking a mild laxative (such as Miralax or Dulcolax) if needed and approved by your surgeon. If your constipation is severe, please contact your surgeon.

How long will my recovery from anesthesia take?

Recovery times differ significantly based upon the surgery/procedure, your medical conditions and if you are taking narcotic pain medication. It is normal for patients to feel drowsy and fatigued for a couple of days following surgery. Drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep to help your body recover.

Are there activities I should avoid after surgery?

Driving is prohibited for 24 hours following surgery and while taking narcotic pain medication. Do not operate machinery or make important business / financial decisions for 24 hours following surgery. We recommend that you plan for a restful day and avoid any strenuous activity.

Can I eat normally after surgery?

In most cases, yes. There are certain surgeries where your surgeon will instruct you otherwise. Plan to introduce foods slowly, starting with easily digestible choices and progress to a normal diet as your body tolerates. Please do not drink alcohol in the 24 hours following surgery and never mix alcohol with narcotic pain medicine.
